QSM 11: The Biggest Update to Quiz and Survey Master Yet

QSM 11 announcement blog banner

QSM has been part of the WordPress ecosystem for a long time. Over the years, people have used it to build everything from simple quizzes to complex assessments for classrooms, training programs, and marketing surveys.

QSM 11 is a major step forward. Instead of just adding new features, this release rebuilds core systems to make quiz creation faster, more flexible, and easier to manage.

Here’s everything new.

What’s New in QSM 11 Core

1. A Rebuilt Frontend Rendering Engine

Quizzes now load faster and behave more reliably, thanks to a completely redesigned frontend rendering engine. The new rendering engine separates every quiz element so they work independently and predictably.

Key highlights:

  • Faster quiz load times and smoother interactions for both creators and participants
  • Timers, progress bars, and navigation buttons now run as independent modules
  • Manual and auto pagination now behave consistently across quizzes.
  • All existing add-ons and premium themes have been tested and updated for compatibility

2. A Redesigned Database Structure

Quiz data is now stored in a more structured format designed for faster queries and better scalability. We’ve introduced a new table that can help store all the additional data for add-ons and core.

Key highlights:

  • Faster queries and reporting, especially for large quiz libraries
  • Quizzes now work as native WordPress custom post types
  • Better performance for sites collecting high volumes of submissions
  • A guided one-time migration wizard handles the upgrade safely

3. Fully Customizable Quiz Elements (Template Overrides)

Every quiz element, including pagination, timers, navigation buttons, and other UI components, can now be customized or overridden using templates. Previously, this required modifying core plugin files. Not everything can be customized safely using templates.

Key highlights:

  • Complete control over quiz appearance and behavior
  • Easy brand alignment without touching core plugin files
  • Clear separation between plugin logic and visual presentation

4. Guided Question Creation Wizard

New users now get a guided, step-by-step walkthrough through the entire question-creation process, with contextual explanations at each stage.

Key highlights:

  • 9-step wizard with steps 1 to 4 covering the essentials
  • Steps 5 to 9 are optional but cover question behavior, logic, and customization.
  • It appears for first-time users but can also be accessed anytime from the ‘Take a tour’ option under the ‘Help’ section on the top right of the tab.
  • Fewer setup errors and a much gentler learning curve

5. Centralized Question Bank

If you’ve ever thought, ‘I know I wrote this question somewhere before,’ the dedicated Question Bank tab is going to save you a lot of time.

Key highlights:

  • View and manage all questions across every quiz in one place
  • Search and filter by quiz, category, or question type
  • Add individual questions or bulk upload via CSV without assigning them to a quiz
  • Quick actions like edit, duplicate, and delete directly from the list

6. Customizable Contact Form Error Messages

Admins can now write their own error messages for contact form fields instead of relying on generic validation text. Small change, big difference for user experience.

7. Phone Number Field Validation

A new pattern-based validation option for phone number fields. You define the exact format you want; for example, you can require phone numbers to follow a specific format like +1 XXXXX XXXXX, and anyone who enters something different will see a validation error before submitting.

What’s New in QSM Add-Ons

8. Quiz Navigator 2.0

The Quiz Navigator has been significantly updated with a smarter, cleaner experience for quiz takers. Previously, navigation statuses only updated when users clicked next or previous. Now they update based on actual question interaction, giving a much more accurate real-time picture of progress.

Key highlights:

  • The new ‘Mark for Review’ option lets quiz takers flag questions before final submission
  • Multi-section support so quizzes can be divided into sections for better organization
  • Smooth navigation between sections and individual questions with a single click
  • Option to display the navigator as a sidebar for a cleaner layout

9. Advanced Timer

The Advanced Timer add-on now comes with Time-Based Points Rules, giving quiz creators more control over how performance is rewarded.

Key highlights:

  • Set custom point multipliers based on how quickly quiz takers finish
  • You set the thresholds and multipliers, and quiz takers are rewarded based on whichever rule they hit
  • Those who don’t meet any rule still walk away with a default points value

10. Advanced Question Types 1.6.0

The Advanced Question type has added a new one—the Sequence Question Type. It asks users to arrange a set of items in the correct order. Users drag and arrange the items, and the answer is evaluated based on whether the sequence is correct.

11. Ultimate 2.0.0

A. Response-based questions without correct/incorrect answers or points

The new update in the Ultimate add-on supports response-based questions without requiring correct/incorrect answers or points. You can select the ‘skip grading’ mode if your questions don’t require points or correct/incorrect answers.

Refer to the Ultimate add-on documentation for a complete setup walkthrough of the add-on

B. Compatibility with QSM 9.1 and above

Ultimate 2.0.0 has been updated to work seamlessly with QSM 9.1 and all versions above, ensuring a smooth experience across recent QSM versions.

12. User Dashboard 2.4.1

A. user_total_points shortcode

A new shortcode that displays the total points a user has earned across all their quiz attempts.

👉🏻 For setup steps and examples using the user_total_points and other shortcodes, see the User Dashboard add-on documentation. → User Dashboard add-on documentation

B. Improved QSM Compatibility

The User Dashboard add-on has been updated to work smoothly with the latest QSM version, ensuring nothing breaks after upgrading.

We’ve covered the highlights here, but the full list lives on our QSM Updates page if you want to check out all the updates released.

What Existing Users Should Know

QSM 11 introduces several structural improvements, but compatibility with existing installations remains an important priority.

The updated frontend rendering system has been tested with official QSM add-ons and themes, including Logic, Gamify, Flashcard, Report and Analysis, and more. Database upgrades are handled through the migration wizard, which checks add-on compatibility before migration begins to prevent unexpected issues.

For most users, upgrading to QSM 11 should maintain existing quiz functionality while introducing all the new capabilities described above.
